Valentines Collection

This cupcake is part of our Valentine's Collection where we explore floriography during the Victorian era. Each flower had a symbolic meaning so secret messages could be sent through bouquets.

Lavender symbolized distrust. Historically, lavender grew in hot climates where venomous snakes frequently made their homes. Thus, the beautiful and fragrant flower could lure a curious person to their death.

Where to Send

Bouquets with lavender were used to encourage a friend to reconsider their choices or to tell someone that you see through their facade.

An 1870s "vinegar Valentine" (intended to be folded over and sealed, the address written on the outside, and sent anonymously through the mail). The sender declares that she would never marry a superficially-attractive male "snake" who would make her miserable as a wife.
